Headlines from The Future of Health conference in Las Vegas

The headlines emanating from #HLTH2018 – The Future of Health conference - taking place in Las Vegas this week sound like the preseason Super Bowl Vegas odds – the day after the Super Bowl upset of the New England Patriots.

To wit, “At @GeisingerHealth we have 13 hospitals. I think my job is to close all of them. I know that if we used proven and behavioral techniques to get us healthy again, half of the 2000 beds I am responsible for would not be there” – Geisinger Health CEO Dave Feinberg

Or this, “Are we polishing the doors on the new house, or are we really building something new and meaningful in #healthcare? The answer is, we have to do both.” –@HealthEcho CEO  Rob @Coppedge

I’m not in Las Vegas this week. Instead, I’m spending time as a mentor for an inspiring group of social entrepreneurs from India, Brazil, and South Africa. These startups are visiting the San Francisco “eco-system” courtesy of (Muhammad) Yunus Social Business & MAN Truck & Bus AG as part of the MAN Impact Accelerator initiative.

What’s refreshing about this experience is how fearless these entrepreneurs are; how undeterred they are by current constraints or future possibilities when it comes to solving a social problem. They aren’t just bolting a new idea onto an old paradigm. They are reimagining ambulance services as bed to bed concierge care transition services. They are redefining farm to table with the delivery of fresh, organic milk to a consumer’s door step with a modern day, tech-enabled milk man.

I learned a lot from my discussions with these global social entrepreneurs. It made me wonder if we need to pay more attention to reverse innovation opportunities in the U.S. healthcare system. Perhaps this is a way we can place bets and overcome the “house edge” our legacy healthcare system has gain change.
