The Possiblists

Welcome to The Possibilists, our summer roundup of updates from our caffeinated den in Oakland and beyond. The summer of 2018 is filled with reflections on the events of 50 years ago. And while history is not repeating itself, this year is giving us an opportunity to pause and reflect.

When we launched this (ad)venture, we did so with the intent to do good with great people, organizations and ideas. At a time when the extremes can seem overwhelming, we are working with clients and causes that remind us of what’s possible.

We hope you’ll take a moment to read about a few of our clients and how we are accelerating their impact. We are proud of the purpose our clients represent and grateful for the opportunity to work with them. Read on for a look at who are #The Possibilists.

Hickman Strategies Supports MEDICC to Promote Reverse Innovation in Pursuit of Health Equity and Universal Health Worldwide

This summer, Hickman Strategies is proud to support Medical Education Cooperation with Cuba (MEDICC) to update their philanthropy and corporate partnership strategy to capture the growing recognition of the reverse innovation opportunities present in Cuba and Latin America.

“Big problems need big solutions, sparked by big ideas, imagination and audacity, but also solutions that work.”

—Gail Reed at TEDMED 2014 on Cuba’s pioneering Latin American Medical School

MEDICC works to forge cooperation between the medical and health-promotion communities of the United States and Cuba, and to share Cuba’s health outcomes and approaches with the world. MEDICC’s programs facilitate learning and field research, and feature the MEDICC Review, a peer-reviewed journal, and MEDICC Gateway exchange programs. MEDICC’s ongoing research and development efforts lead to more effective health strategies and new treatments for diseases affecting the U.S. and Latin America.

Read about US scholarship students and grads of Havana’s Latin American School of Medicine–and MEDICC’s support for them–in Anakwa Dwamena’s The New Yorker article. MEDICC’s Pipeline to Community Service assists these diverse, smart and dedicated young people to follow their passion and their social commitment by providing mentors, fellowships for their medical licensing exams and more to help them make a difference in U.S. health care.

Hickman Strategies Expands Reach with New Partner, Additional Services

We're pleased to announce an exciting partnership with Washington, DC, based Network for Good and its Vice President of Programs & Collective Impact, Brian Lauterbach, to promote the Jumpstart Program and its National Assessment of Grantee Readiness initiative.

"Jim Hickman’s experience and leadership as a strong advocate for the digital transformation of the nonprofit sector, especially for the safety net, make this partnership a perfect fit to achieve our shared vision,” said Brian Lauterbach.

Using the Evelyn and Walter Haas, Jr. Fund’s national study on the challenges facing nonprofit fundraising, “Underdeveloped,” as a starting point, Network for Good created the Jumpstart Program. With the recent reports on the importance of general operating support funding, it’s clear there is a growing understanding of the link between a nonprofit’s ability to effectively fundraise and its ability to create and sustain impact through its programs. Jumpstart expands a grantmaker’s impact   by helping each of their grantees diversify funding and increase revenue through 12-months of technical assistance, templates and a toolkit.

Hickman Strategies will work with Network for Good’s Impact Team to support its work with community foundations and other grantmaker’s participating in this national initiative in Northern California and in the health sector.

Let us know how we can help on you build capacity and impact. Read more about Network for Good’s National Assessment of Grantee Readiness by going here or contacting us here.

Hickman Strategies Works with the Public Health Institute to Broaden its Funding

We believe good public health practices and programs are a cornerstone for healthy individuals and communities. Hickman Strategies is excited to work with the leadership and board of the Public Health Institute to engage individual philanthropists in the Public Health Institute’s mission and programs

“Where we take care of each other, where we are generous and kind, where we speak up and listen, and where we prioritize not just what is best for us, but what is best for each other – these are the places where there is hope, health and justice.”

– Mary A. Pittman, DrPH. President & CEO, Public Health Institute
